Timeline Breakdown
Fall PGY 1
- Create/update your CV
- Keep a running list of
activities that you
participate in
From here on out, think of everything in the following domains
- Make a great brand for
yourself
- Request as many clinics consult
months, etc. in your chosen field
- This is difficult to distinguish on
an ERAS application, make
yourself stand out
Clinical Performance
- This is most applicable if you
want to match at your home
institution, but it never hurts to
have a good connection with
others
- This can be a deciding factor
on Match Day
- At a minimum:
Sit down with the fellowship
PD and express interest
Get to know the current
fellows and core faculty
Connections
- Anything showing academic
productivity, effort, leadership,
and going above and beyond
- Join an already existing project
Scholarly
Activity
These connections can be:
Residency PD/APD or other Faculty
Fellowship
PD

- PDs and APDs look for well-rounded future fellows
- Get involved in something you enjoy doing
- Consider the different educational tracks:

Hospital Medicine, Primary Care, Clinical Educator, Global Health, POCUS
Leadership, Tracks, Volunteering, etc.
Also focus on:
Spring PGY 1
-Find a foothold in original research, or submit a case report to a major conference with the goal of presenting during your second year
- Identify one ore multiple mentor, with at least one in your field of interest
-Don't be afraid to show interest to fellowship PD/APDs
Spring PGY 2
- You are in the home stretch!
- You should be in the fellowship PD's
office at least once during this time
- Be in regular contact with your
mentors
- Put the finishing touches on any ongoing scholarly activity
- Identify 3 authors for letters of
recommendation

Fall PGY 2
- Work on scholarly activities and try to
attend major conferences to present
your work
- Applications are due in July of your
PGY 3 year
-The format for your CV entry in
ERAS is not conducive to future
presentations and publications
- Double back to clinics, units, consult
blocks, etc. now that you have more
experience. Make the most of it
Spring PGY 2 Fellowship Checklist
JANUARY
Make requests for subspecialty faculty in your next clinic block to solidify relationship/exposure to faculty that could be potential letter writers
Attend Junior Day during Career Week
FEBRUARY
If you couldn't attend Career Week, watch the recordings
Brainstorm ideas on letter-writers, talk with current fellows or your PD/APD's about letter writer prospects
MARCH
Begin a general brainstorm of your personal statement
Consider a good time in the spring to meet with the fellowship PD. If you have not yet met with the PD of your specialty, schedule a time to specifically declare interest in your specialty
Attend Junior Retreat
APRIL
Ask faculty to write your letters of recommendation
Draft a personal statement
MAY
Attend Dr. Deep's "Hit the Submit" talk
Finalize your personal statement. Ask 1-2 friends or family to read it.
Ask 1-2 core faculty or PD/APD's to edit it
Categorize your "CV-able" items that you plan to insert into ERAS
Schedule a meeting with your PD to review the above (this should be separate from your semi-annual meeting)
JUNE
ERAS opens, complete your application
Attend fellowship Q&A about the fellowship interview process
Interview reflection and preparation
Complete mock interviews
JULY
Submit your application in ERAS
SEPTEMBER - NOVEMBER
Complete your interviews
NOVEMBER/
DECEMBER
MATCH DAY!
